Lurker here that finally made a profile haha.

Question

I have a 1977 D100 Utiline with a 318. I am dead set on an EFI setup. I have figured that I will have to redo the entire fuel system, Wiring and some engine modifications to get to setup up properly.
I am not afraid of the work and understand that it would not be plug and play.

My question is this?
Would it be better to do a EFI swap like Holley sniper or FiTech on a factory carb truck like this OR trade/sell for an 88-93 ram that had it from the factory. I do really like that body style just as much, as well as finding a 92 with a magnum engine and a five speed (which I really like).

I guess the would you rather is considering the time/money/parts availability investment as well. I am not particular to either body style.

Any insight from the more experienced would be nice.

My current thought is for the time, money investment I could just get one that is factory and sell to someone who would want to keep my current truck carbed.

Hey there if you like the truck you have go for aftermarket EFI you can tune it easily as opposed to factory set up which you will need to pay someone to tune it if you want to perk it up and feel anything

I know nutin about it!! Do know a little bit about the mid 90's port injection systems and yeah, gotta get someone that has the tools for it. I have two mid 90's Dakotas and knock on wood, they keep on truckin. Picked up a load of crap gas in one of them that was full of crap and had to replace a couple of injectors. A friend of mine had a injection tester that would pulse the injector. It was like a 1/2 second pulse and man, that thing surprised me with the amount of fuel it put out!

I'm in the (very very long) process of putting a 90 drivetrain in a 73 ClubCab. If I would have known it was going to be this much of a pain in the ass I would have come up with a different plan to begin with. Don't get me wrong, it's all very doable. It's just not as simple as it initially looks, everything from the one generation to the next is almost the same... almost. I have a bunch of videos about the entire project starting from getting it on the yard to now ((( ))) some of these are relevant to what you're doing, some not.

Thank you all for the replies. For what it's worth I'm taking a cash offer for what I have now for hopefully a shop can be built in my property. I think I will look for an 88-93 because even if I go aftermarket in theory the wiring will already by up to snuff

I'm with you on the 88-91 being crap. The 92 I think is a magnum so ,they actually work.
I went with a Aces joker system for my 89 d100. It seems pretty complete but, I don't know what else is controlled by the factory ecm. You know like, cruse, etc. Anyone ever used this setup?

Depends on engine. 92 360 was still TBI, it was a year behind the 318 in getting the magnum version.
Not sure about cruise, but the gauges are still like the carburetor trucks.

I too have done the opposite, went back to a carb on originally TBI trucks. And i'd probably still have my 88 if I had done that, I had wanted to the whole time I had that truck and fought the TBI on it . I'm building a d250 from the frame up as we speak, with parts from '81 to '00 going back in.
Officially by the numbers it'll always be an "83" by the title and tags.... 83 frame, 90 cab, 91 bed, 99 trans (nv4500) and 00 360 magnum that is definitely staying carbureted. No ands ifs or buts. Probably a TQ at that .. since I only have like 4 of them. Plan B is one of my afb's or edelbrocks (these are basically the same carb as each other but a lot different from the TQ.). No EFI and no Holley for me

On the cruise control, the testing only refers to the ecm being the problem on standard equipped vehicles. I really don't want to find out the hard way. Also, I'm sick of looking at all that wiring. Even though I wrapped it all with purple electrical tape.
The harness from Aces is petty simple. I did see someone on YouTube disembowel a harnesses. Hours of entertainment pleasure doing that....yah,right.

I'm going to try to decipher the transmission wiring next. The book gets a little confusing as to what transmission it is . I know it's a OD with the backwards disengage button on the dashboard. A ,500?
