42RH into my 87

Well, after the ATF cleared out all the cylinders were re-tested truly dry.

All at 140-145psi save cylinder 6...best i could get was 125.

Still not bad, probably gonna run it.

So...pulling the trigger on the leak down tester. What percent is reasonable to still run with...that is, go thru the angst and frustration of installation and set up of the Magnum/42RH in my truck?

I guess, where I won't be disappointed in performance and oil consumption...
 
The 92 Dakota I pulled the transmission out of was all solid linkage. Visually, while first lying under the truck then trudging over to look at the RH in the garage, the >LOOK< the same...but nothing is set up yet. I am gonna finish up the Magnum then start working on that next problem.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy that. I have owned almost 2 dozen Dak's, mostly OBD1, 92-95 and am here to tell you, I have never seen mechanical linkage on anything 92+. 92 was the first year of the SMPI Magnum and both 3.9 & 5.2 had a throttle body where the kick down was cable from the passenger side of the TB to a pull setup on the trans, not push as linkage do. I'll dig out my 92 Dak FSM when I get a chance. I have every FSM 92-96..

You could very well be right and who knows what year the Dak I was digging under was--the #92 was written on the windshield. But looking at pictures online of Dakotas, it was NOT a 92..body style was like below, which looks like my 87 did. For that matter who knows what the 92 on the windshield even meant.

What I DO know is that it was all solid linkage and I am working on a 42RH that came out of it.

That's an 87-90.
Trans should be the same as if it was a 92. Any up to 95 should be pretty much the same

I have an a500/42RH I pulled from a 91 that I scrapped. I'm rebuilding it to go into my 85 behind my slant 6. I have an adapter for that a factory Mopar part from the 1960s before Mopar came out with a /6 specific 727 case. Up until about 1968ish trucks with an automatic came with this setup. The 727 in my 85 still working fine except for a leak that I haven't been able to find. It's not the pan and is on the driver side. Either the seal where the linkage comes thru the case or else it's seeping thru the threads of the band adjuster studs.
 
Got the number off the transmission: PK 53009256 0889 1470

1991 42RH/A500 -- so I guess the Dak was a 1991.

Pulled the pan and filter, not the worst I have ever seen...had a small amount of debris on the magnet.

This actually makes me think the transmission might be suspect -- like someone changed the fluid/filter right before this thing got hauled off...idk, maybe just being paranoid.

I adjusted the front and rear bands and have a front seal for it...maybe I will put it in behind the tired 318, just to set it up and test it before the JY warranty expires...i wonder about rebuilding the thing at home. I have done several 998/904s at home successfully, but have never (yet?) tackled the OD part.

I would have a slant is this truck in a HEARTBEAT if I had that adapter. Wife and I were just talking about that!

I am having the same exact problem on my 69 904 that's in my slanted dart.

They're out there but not easy to find
And those that have them don't want to cough them up. A while back, there was talk about how I guess quite a while before that someone from the slant 6 website had some made up out of aluminum, a group buy of sorts... But I was in between slant 6s at that time so I didn't get in on it. That's probably been 10-15 years ago. I had to buy a whole 1964 engine and trans that came out of a truck and was sitting in the dirt on a barn floor to get mine. I then sold off the engine and trans separately once I split them to get the adapter parts out. There is a spacer for the crank that pushes the flex plate back also by the thickness of the adapter plate which is cast iron.
 
And get this ... While I had that slant 6 on my trailer still bolted together I put jumper cables right to the trans and a jumper to the + side of the coil, and hooked a gas can to the fuel pump... After filing the points I actually had that engine running while sitting on my trailer before I split them up for the parts I was after..... I have no idea how long it had been sitting. A little dribble down the carb until the fuel pump started doing its thing and it actually started quite easily....
 
slants are tough...built a few decent running ones. Never had a REALLY fast one. Ran high 14s in a 65 B'cuda with one. Thought I was hot stuff.

I've had a few. Strangely mostly in trucks. Have had a few cars with them. The last car I had (still have the car, it's blown apart for paint, I picked up a small block k frame for when it goes back together. That engine was destined for an oliver tractor last I knew
 
I built one a few years ago that's in that truck that I want to put the a500 into. First time I have ported a head. I put oversized valves in plus milled off 0.100 between block and head. Has a reground cam in it from Oregon cams.
1974 forged crank short block, later 70s peanut plug head. Need to get back on it I have the cab blown apart to add all the "factory AC" parts into it that I've accumulated over the years. That plus reapply seam sealer everywhere since all of that has dried up and cracked off/ fallen out of where it originally was. Have a water leak into the cab and I discovered that's where it was coming from. Seam between cowl and firewall behind e brake pedal
