Help with my son’s truck! We’ve recently replaced the coil and fuel pump as it would crank but not turn over. After finally getting the correct order of the distributor wires, it fired up and ran for a day. The following day it fired up but stalled after five minutes in the drive way. Won’t turnover since. Anyone have advice? Spark plugs are all new and show spark when tested. So frustrated.

Has the truck been sitting idle for a long time? It may have bad fuel or clogged fuel lines.

Do you have access to a multimeter - volts and ohms specifically. Testing voltage and continuity of cable/wiring can be helpful if we provide some advice.

Hopefully you have a replaceable fuel filter near the pump...it might pay to check the condition if it is old --- or check what is inside it. You can buy cheaper transparent filters - good for looking at the fuel flow and cleanliness, and seeing air bubbles etc.

Condition of the spark plugs might be something else you could check....they may be quite old and already sooted/carbonned up.

Lots to look at , so hopefully you can rule things out one by one by checking things for us. :)

The possibilities are rusty tank plugging filters and carb, float sunk, stuck needle and seat, fuel lines with leaks sucking air, bad gas and bad fuel pump or any combination of the above. Make sure you have fuel at the carb and work from there. I'd also look for rust in the fuel, a common problem in a 50 year old vehicle.

Thank you! You were right it cranks but doesn’t start. Last night we finally got it to start. I checked the choke, it wasn’t flooded, the fuel pump, distributor and spark plugs are all new. It fired up this morning and 20 miles down the road at a stop light it just died and would fire back up. We pushed it to a side street and now have to have it towed. I don’t see a choke knob in the cab so other than viewing it from above it appears to be working. I don’t know what to check next but will get a multimeter tonight.

Driving 20 miles then stops....sounds like a broken wire to me...probably near the ballast resistor.

Jumper wire from positive side of battery to the ballast input and see if it starts. It may not be ideal to drive that way but will give you an idea were to start on the electrical. Just remember to disconnect it to shut the truck off.

Drives for awhile and then stops? Make sure that the exhaust is flowing free. If the truck has sat for some time make sure nothing built a mouse nest in the tail pipe. Once the exhause builds up in the cyclinders it leaves no room for fresh gas to enter the chambers.

Built up gasses in the exhaust will usually contribute to a huge explosion, blowing the exhaust apart instead of killing the engine. Not implying it could never happen. Just highly unlikely.

I wanted to thank all of you, you have been just amazing helping make suggestions. I’ll just say it again as a single mom who only knows what she learned from her dad growing up, you guys made all the difference in the world. When he replaced the coil, fuel pump, other items that have been suggested he disconnected the battery. That metal Part (not sure of the name) that is on the battery terminal was cracked so he replaced it. When everybody suggested electrical we looked at the wires that were fed into it and it was loose. So all of you were correct that it would make contact and then it would pull off causing everything to not fire correctly. We were able to fix that last night and it is running like it has never ran before. Again I just can’t thank you enough for being so helpful, knowledgeable and in my book just amazing. Thank you again

Glad to hear you got it going and that we were of some help. This was one of those times it was simple. We often look at the difficult first and we all seen to make that mistake.
