Ideally I want something big enough to tow a gooseneck stock trailer for horses. I'm trying to figure out advantages to diesels vs gassers. The pros and cons to the different diesel engine's. Duramax, Powerstroke, Cummins. Pros and cons to 2 wheel drive vs 4 wheel drive. I will most likely tow to the Rockies in Colorado 885 miles sometimes and across Texas.
 
You'll probably want a 4wd diesel for hauling a goose neck horse trailer. My stepson has a Dodge Crew Cab Dually for his horses.
 
If it is going to used mainly for towing you defiantly want a diesel just like Locu and 7mopar said. I get that question from customers a lot. If your only going to tow twice a year get gas but if the trailer and truck will become one go diesel.
As to pros and cons all 3 have them. The GM has the best trans with the Allison, if going Duramax get a 04.5 and up, if going Dodge from what I know both the 5.9 and 6.7 are good, Trans's have gotten better and can be built up. Ford 6.0 can be trouble some but can be built up to bulletproof them, 6.4's run good, I have a friend with one that has EGR delete, diesel particulate filter delete, tuner and it is a runner. 6.7's run good. Ford Trans's are ok and can be built if need be.
I would go 4WD but we get all kinds of weather here, if it's only going to be used in fair weather you can get by with 2WD. When you decide on a brand visit diesel truck websites and ask the same questions. I hope this helps.
I would own one my self but I don't tow enough to justify the extra cost of maintenance and parts.
 
I saw your welcome post and your only 17, what do you have to spend on this rig? 7.3 Ford's are also good with a tuner and can be found cheaper. With a diesel if you have to replace injectors it can get expensive with any of them.
 
That sounds like a good event. Car shows are a nice way to see different models. It is always interesting to see what people bring. Ford is a strong choice.
 
If you're going to be hauling a gooseneck stock trailer over long distances, a diesel is a better choice. Diesel motors will produce more torque for towing and will use less fuel when carrying heavy loads. Gas motors may be lower in initial cost but they use more fuel and will last less long under heavy loads.

Duramax is tough and smooth but can possibly cost more to repair. Cummins is durable and simple but the truck it's in can suffer from issues. Powerstroke is high-towing power and there are many different types of trucks to choose from.

2 wheel drive is lighter and cheaper. 4 wheel drive is more traction in the mountains, snow, or mud but heavier and cheaper. Since you will be towing in the Rockies, 4 wheel drive will pay dividends for you.

A Ford with a Powerstroke would be an excellent choice for your needs.

Why do you continually dig up all the ancient posts?? Check the dates once in awhile.
