So, what can I look at to improve in town MPG?

Try accelerating 11000. I have not checked it this winter but about 15 for summer driving is normal for the F250. Last winter it had some ignition problems that did not get fixed till the summer blend became available so have not done a comparison as yet.

My Dodge diesel is almost 6200 and it gets 17-19 in town and has pulled down 25 on the highway doing 65 but around here, you'll get run over if you ain't doing at least 75!.
 
Check that the brakes are not dragging more than normal.
Make sure the oxygen sensor is working well.
Check the throttle body for carbon build up.
Replace spark plugs and wires if they are old.
Make sure the coolant temp sensor is reading right.
Look for vacuum leaks.
A gear change may give more power but can lower fuel use only in some driving.
 
I've had several V6 Dakota trucks starting with an 87. That one was the best on mpg of all the ones I've had. No OD but had a 2.94 rear gear iirc. Low 20's on the hiway was easy and so was getting 17 in town. Next was a 90 extended cab. Talk about not much spunk vs the 87. Don't remember the numbers on that pig but I remember it wasn't as good as the 87. Then a 92 reg cab short box and it got 16 in town but never tried for good mileage on the road. Get this now....that truck had a 5.2 in it with 3.90 gears! Best I ever got with the 95 in town was 16 and that was driving it with the 'egg' under the pedal....same thing with the 96. Imo, the V6 should have never been sold with a 3.55 in them! It ain't no fun slow walking them from a light as you end up in the way and everyone trying to pass you and then flipping you off.
 
V6 in the 93 extended cab didn't get any better fuel milage than the present 06 F250 xlt with the 5.4. i don't miss the Dakota one bit.

The Dakota is a good truck....except for mileage. I've used mine for parts chasers and going to the store for groceries (tool box or plastic storage container in the back) and parking is a breeze plus loading 1500 lbs isn't hard. I have a 97 2500 Club Cab lwb diesel and well, it's just big but is also a good truck. The 92 was a toy and for the times, it was beating the Mudstains lol
 
Put a 318 in there. Seriously I've had more Dakotas than I care to remember. Best mileage for the V6 ones I've had was my 90. I've had 92, 93 and a 96 all with 318s and except for the 96/ which was also the only 4wd of the bunch/ as well as the only one without 3.55s, and every 318 Dakota I've had had been better on gas than any of my V6 ones
And the 96 was no worse on fuel than any of my 2wd V6 powered ones were ..

I converted the 93 to a stick and it was by far the best one I had for mileage came from the factory with the 318 and the 3.55s, I put in an nv3500 in place of the dead 518 that came with it when I got it, it was rare not to get at least 20 mpg with that truck. I miss that one, but I wrecked it back in about 2016, way beyond fixing
