Is there a way to tell if a transmission or engine is original to the truck?

Dodge Dakota 96 and the transmission is what's in question....but I was under the impression that like the older Mopar cars, the drive line numbers matched the last several numbers of the VIN. IE, numbers matching or not. Not really an issue with that but wanted to know if the trans in the truck in question is original or not.

I just took the original 4.7 and 545RFE out of my wife's 04 Dakota quad cab, and there wasn't a number stamped on either one of them....anywhere. If there's a VIN on a 96 model automatic transmission, it will be on a raised pad, on the passenger side of the bellhousing. That truck should have an A500 or an A518 in it, if it's an automatic. A stick truck...I have no clue where a number would be! Good luck.
