8 1/4 axle splines

i have a '91 dakota 8 1/4 sure grip.will it work for earlier years? the dealer listed '91-'93 as having the same axle but couldn't tell me if it was because of the spline count. did earlier 8 1/4 diffs. have a different spline count? thank you, john.

spline count is the same up till 1997 when they changed to 29 spline, earlier dakota axles are 5x4.5 bolt pattern which is good for changing bolt pattern
