Would like to put some paint back on my 1993 Dakota. Is has remaining paint stages form original clear coat to bare metal. I am thinking the clear coat will need to be removed and prepped as for a normal paint job. Am I headed in the right direction? And what type paint would be most compatible with the original paint?

You don't need to strip it all down to bare metal, just as long as the loose stuff is removed, and as long as there is no rust underneath. Then coat the truck in a sealer then you can do your base coats, clear coats.

Like JGC403 said. Get all the loose clear off, wet sand with 400-600, and then seal it. Shoot base coat/clear coat back over it. Factory paint is best left on whenever possible. Good luck! Post pics when done.
