early dakota 2wd 5spd with 3.9 to 1972 5.2 can i swap the motor and use the trans and what ever else i know i need mounts, headers, any help thanks mopops

I don't know if the 5 speed will handle 5.2, you will need a flywheel and clutch for the 5.2 with the correct splines, 5.2 radiator, mounts and anything that is 5.2 Dakota only. What year Dakota? I don't remember what year they switched from the LA series engine to the Magnum series.

Gen 1 Dakota. Do not know why it would not work. Just remember the nose on the Gen 1's are shorter. Radiator and fan location maybe a bite of a problem.

ok will probably go with a 904&5.2 in 2nd gen for the room -trying to get away from obd2 tests for inspection - its just a putter around truck for a retired guy-me

I am looking at a 91 v6 5 spd 2wd i may look for something else if the 5 spd won't hold up- so if it s got a bad motor good trans it should bolt up to the LA motor-just trying to have a easy truck to deal with and just a little snot to it

I have no idea why the 5 spd would not be strong enough for a 5.2 ap. Getting it in there maybe challenging but it has been done before.

thank you, I am in the shopping stage trying to get it wright the first time. i am sure i ll be back with more questions

I didn't know if they used different strength transmissions for V6 or V8 applications, GM's used different torque rated transmissions depending on if it was a V6 or V8 wasn't sure about Mopar.

Depending on the years there is not much difference in hp or torque ratings of a 3.9 verses a 5.2. On years like the 93 I have they utilize the same transmition. There maybe a difference in torque converters but that is an easy enough swap. Get a V8 into a truck not designed for it will be a much larger issue.

we put a 5.9 in a 82 ram 50 a few years ago- what a sleeper - so the 5.2 we have laying around will find a new home thanks geo.

Quite late to this one but have some info. If you plan to drop a V8 in a 86-89 its do-able. The 89 Shelby Dak had a LA 5.2 with TBI. The fan was elec and had to be a pusher do to room. If your doing a 90-96 its much more do-able because they came with V8 from Ma Mopar. You biggest problem will be the oil pan and pickup because the Dak has a very large X member that requires a very small sump area all the way at the rear. The Shelby and 90-91 pan used to be available but Ive exhausted every source and they all say disco and gone.

Im about to put a 340 in an 87, an 86/7 is the best model IMO because it was carbureted from the factory so emissions and race tuning is easier. Im using the stock 340 pan rail and welding on a rear sump Magnum 5.2 pan lower section.

Modifications will vary dependent on what year and if SMPI, TBI, carb and then what type of engine, LA, Magnum, that you use. LA to a SMPI is the toughest to do due to accessories, CPS, etc. You want a great base, start with a 94/5 Dak 5.2. It has OBD1 and is very forgiving with mild mods. 92/3 had the most stock HP but doesnt have an airbag but does have return style fuel system so it lends itself to tuning very well also. Feel free to PM me as I have been working on Dak's since they were new, just about.

Oh and, the early (up to 95 I think) had the very weak Ax5 in all 4cyls and semi weak Ax15 in V6's and some very early V6's had the Ax5. Ive grenaded Ax15's with a mild built 3.9 Magnum 6.

To expand on scoots info. 87-89 can be a challenge due to 2" shorter front. No room for mech fan. Dual slimline 12" pushers can be used but must fit between rad and a/c condenser (if a/c equipped). 91 and beyond is much simpler. Assuming 318LA. Here are some additional things to consider. These are just things I have run into with my Shelby.
904 vs 5spd - If you are not using the factory fuel system/ecu you will need to address control issues on the OD and TC lockup. I believe the shift points/kickdown were still hydraulic until 93. Same issue with AC. ECU looks for TPS inputs and evap sensor signal to cycle AC. 5 spd would avoid the OD and lockup issues. AC control can be handled with a adustable capillary sensor. All of the issues can be handled, but pulling everything off the ECU can be a challenge. Documentation on MOPAR ECU programing/control is not readily available. Happy to discuss work arounds or other issues with you.
