Getting ready to purchase a 84 short bed with an 8 1/4 and Im wanting to put a 8 3/4 in it and I’m wanting to make sure those are direct bolt in with no problems in that truck. I can get a 9 1/4 but I like the 8 3/4 better as I’m somewhat familiar with them.

Unless you're putting down over 500hp to the ground the 8 3/4 is really over kill, especially if you can get a 9 1/4 that bolts right in. I've never seen an 8 3/4 in 3/4 or 1 ton options, 9 1/4 was commonly used for 3/4 vans and a few 1 tons in the 70's; some 3/4 pickups in the 80's. According to Hollandars interchange the 8 3/8 (8 1/4) was even used in some 1 ton vans in the 80's. The 8 3/4 is better is you're pounding A LOT of power through it. The 9 1/4 (and 8 3/8 to a slightly lesser degree) is great for over weight, general abuse and neglect.

Here's a list with a bunch of measurements you can compare. I'm putting an 8 3/4 out of a 68 D100 into my 88 D100. Looks to be a direct bolt in. I have axles with the 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern, as well as the 4 1/2 bolt pattern in the rearend I'm swapping in. If I have to buy new front rotors, I will just buy 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. A friend of mine used an 8 3/4 out of a C body, and bolted it onto the top of the springs in his D100, instead of the bottom like a truck does. He used B van lower control arms and lowered his truck with all factory parts. It sits just right! Good luck to you.
