What trans is behind a 318 in a 97 Ram 1500 2wd extended cab short box? Just want to know if it's the same as my 98 Ram 2500 4x4 before I get it.

Automatic or manual? Two wheel drive will use a different tail shaft either way.

Automatic. Forgot that. I'm more interested in the case and other goodies off the truck, if the transmission is the same.

46, 47 or 48 RE 96 to 01. The 97 318 more than likely has the 46RE.
Have read there is a difference in overdrive placement between two and four wheel drive vehicle's.

So, other than OD, the internals are the same, 2wd and 4wd? The trans would be the main reason to get the truck, if it's different I probably wouldn't bother.

Would think the fourwheel drive would have heavier duty internals.
