Removing Fuel Sending Unit

How do you get the sending unit out of the tank? Is there a special tool to fit over the retainer that screws into the tank? I tried tapping it with a punch, but no luck so far.

I use a pair of giant Channel locks

Are you replacing the fuel sending unit

I just tapped it with a screw driver, spins off pretty easy. Mine was plastic so be gentle if yours it plastic also.
I tilted the box up to gain clearance since the strap bolts looked too rusty.
