F-650 and F-750 trucks used to be made in Mexico at a joint venture plant with Navistar

Ford celebrates the return of medium-duty truck production in the U.S. today.

Joe Hinrichs, president of the Americas, was to be in Avon Lake, Ohio, for the production launch of the new 2016 Ford F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks, which had been built in Mexico in a joint venture plant with Navistar.

Moving that work to the Ohio plant preserves about 1,400 jobs and represents a $168-million investment in a new body shop and tooling.

“Our investment in Ohio Assembly Plant reinforces our commitment to building vehicles in America and to delivering best-in-class commercial trucks,” Hinrichs said in a statement. “Working with our partners in the UAW, we found a way to make the costs competitive enough to bring production of a whole new generation of work trucks to Ohio.”

"Through collective bargaining, we were able to secure production of the Ford F-650/F-750 to Ohio Assembly Plant,” said Jimmy Settles, UAW vice president and director, National Ford Department, in a news release.

The production shift from Mexico was negotiated as part of the 2011 collective agreement with the UAW. Mexico remains an issue today as the two sides negotiate a new master agreement to take effect when the current one expires Sept. 14. The union is already upset that Ford recently announced plans to spend $2.5 billion to build new engines and transmissions in Mexico.

The Avon Lake plant built the E-Series van until the summer of 2014. The van has been discontinued but the plant continues to make the E-Series cutaway vans and stripped chassis that are used for vehicles such as ambulances.

The F-650 and F-750 commercial trucks are available in regular, crew and super cab body styles as well as tractor trailer and other versions for commercial use.

The trucks have a 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine and transmission combination that was developed by the automaker. In the past, Ford used a Cummins diesel engine and an Allison transmission. Ford also offers a 6.8-liter V10 gasoline engine, and it can be converted to run on natural gas or liquid propane gas.
