Hey folks, I have 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, SCSWB 2WD that I'm having an issue with.

5.2 Magnum/46RE Transmission

When on the highway and passing other traffic, the transmission keeps shifting erratically up and down through the gears.

I'm thinking it should hold the passing gear and then smoothly select 4th gear but that is not the case.

Also, in town , I have to modulate the upshift with gas pedal pressure or the vehicle will over rev until I back off the throttle, then it shifts.

Any suggestions?

Possible governor pressure solenoid??

Here's a pic of my truck.

Could be the shift solenoid or pressure solenoid. Someone makes a kit that has them in a set, maybe Sonnax? Try running a bottle of ATP AT-205 in the tranny first. The solenoids may just be sticking & the AT-205 may fix your problem. I've used it with great results. It's worth a try. I know Amazon has it. $20 or so for a small (8oz?) bottle though.

Thanks for the info niceolddart!

The truck has 150,000miles on it and is completely original including the paint so maybe its time to replace the solenoids anyway.

Other than that ,its very reliable and still gets 16mpg which I'm told is very good for these trucks.

Some company makes an up-graded solenoid kit for these but I'm not sure of the company name. I'm sure you can find them on the internet though.
