MP performance distributor vs installing new weight springs.

    ok so i have a mild build 360 not sure of compression ratio and a mp purple cam 262/270 455 i think... i am having a timing problem where the advance is a little loopy (high idle and dies when put into drive) . i was wondering if it would be as good swapping out the mech advance springs for the lighter ones or just biting the bullet and getting the MP distributor or summit equvilent...or even going to the hei setup?

    I had the 260/268, Lift .430/.450 purple shaft in a 360 was running it with one of those MP orange box/distro kits. Was a real nice setup for a mildly built 360. Not really sure though how those distros differ from a stock one. Out of curiousity what is your init timing set at?

    That's a good question "mopardude" , now for my two cent's . lol Are you shure it's a timeing problem "gnome" ? Whats your idle set at , What happen's if you disconect your vac. hose from your dist ? It allmost sounds like the stall in your torque converter is'nt high enough and it's pulling it down when you put it in gear . The cam might be bigger then you think though . But that still would'nt explain the high idle .

    well when i pull the vacuum and plug everything off i set timing around 15° btdc, thats with the choke kicked off.

    i was reading in several other forums that the stock dist mechanical advance is sloppy and can go out of range quickly and cause issues like no start after setting total timing... i was wondering if the lighter springs for the mechanical advance would help with my setup.

    i did however find a cracked grommet at the power brake booster, i will change it out and see if that improves my situation.
    i will update after i change it out.

    any tips for the easiest way to set up initial timing so i can my carb correctly?

    one thing to aqdd is that i am using rhoades variable rate lifters if that has any effect on it.

    Your setting your total timing to 15? That would explain some of the issues you have. I would start there for your init and your total should be in the low 30's.



    It is my understanding that on a mopar distro the mechanical is hard set and the springs control the curve. So not sure what you mean by sloppy.

    well its not the grommet...and the crack wasnt all the way through...looks like i will tinker around after work this week.

    ok..here is the plan before i replace any parts.

    set base idle at 15° btdc
    check for total timing at ~ 35° btdc @~3k rpm

    then make carb adjustments as needed.

    Any other idears?

    Did this problem just start happening or did you change something out that caused it?

    its done this since the rebuild ~6months just never got around to fixing it.

    well...i'm an idiot... lol i left the power brake booster inlet to the carb open... i plugged it up and no problem.... :frusty: but now i'm hearing a knock on the bottom end...looks like i'm pulling the engine back out... :Cry:
