I have a '78 D-300 on which the lower, plastic fuel tank (the long, skinny one on the driver's side, between the frame and the driveshaft) is toast and NLA. The other day I was under a 2004 Ram 2500 and noticed that the lower fuel tank looks somewhat similar to my old, leaking one. Would anybody have any opinions about whether I might be able to make it work in my '78? Thanks a lot.

You will need a fuel pressure regulator with return, wiring form the 2004 for the fuel pump plus the relay, fuse and injection lines to the regulator at least. Plus what ever else it takes to mount the tank.

Of course my '78 uses neither a fuel pressure regulator nor an in-tank fuel pump, so it would be my intention to eliminate them. Any reason why I couldn't??

Not sure how the in tank pump mounts on that. You maybe able to remove the pump, extend to line and put a sock on it. i would go to Rock Auto and see what a replacement pump looks like and go from there.

might be better off using a late '60s Mustang tank. couple sections of angle iron for mounts, between the rear frame. How tos on Google.

A retro fit might be an option, but you'd want the tank right next to the old one to figure out what lines need to be modified if any. I imagine the mounting flange is different for the later in tank pump unit, but you may be able to make an adapter plate to mount and older style sending unit. But you never know what may bolt right in when using different year parts with Mopars, an 80's Diplomat suspension bolts into a '37 Chrysler, or something like that, with no modifications. Good luck, keep us posted.
