I'm sure with the combined knowledge and experience here, you all could help point me in the right direction. I'm looking to replace my 2014 Tahoe with a truck for practical purposes. I work in my vehicle for about 8 hours a day, mostly idle with stop and goes in between, 5 days a week, about 9 months (Oct-June) a year. Besides that, I put about 20-30k miles per year on my vehicle. I bought my Tahoe 3 years ago with 40k miles and just hit 140k.

I trade in my vehicle every 3-4 years and I'd like to keep my next vehicle for at least 5-7 years.
I don't do any hauling, though if I did, it would be very light.
I'd like to spend around 30-35k on a used truck.
I like the 2015-2016 F250 super duty and prefer to drive a larger vehicle.

Do you think a diesel would be worth it or should I stick with gas and not worry about the higher costs involved with owning a diesel? I'm looking at diesel because I plan on buying used and want to keep it for many years.

The only input I've received so far is my co-worker recommended a newer, lighter used non-diesel and just trade it in after a few years...

I talked to a guy last fall in pretty much your same situation only he buys new every two years. Yea the company will not let him drive anything older than two years. He has been buying F250 diesel's for the retained retail value of a higher mileage truck. People will buy a two year old diesel truck with 150000 and think nothing of it. Not sure you can buy a 4 or 5 year old in your price range.

If the truck sits and idles a lot you don't want a newer diesel. Lots of idle time will cause it to want and regen more often and if it doesn't get out and run to complete a full regen it will get to the point where it will need a forced regen with a scan tool or a long drive. Maintenance will cost more and repairs cost more for a diesel

From what I have read the same thing will occur with vehicles that are only driven in the city at slow speeds.

A well maintained diesel with 100K-150K miles on it isn't an issue. Ask for service records, and look at the condition of the rest of the truck, too. Usually, people who take care of the truck's exterior and interior, also keep up with mechanical maintenance and services.

If you're not going to do any hauling, why get a diesel? I use my truck like a truck, but not enough to justify a diesel, I can haul what I need to in my 22 year old 3/4 ton truck with 245k on the ticker. A new 1/2 ton truck can tow more than mine is rated for, so a 3/4 or 1 ton for the diesel isn't required. Keep the Toyota for another 3-12 years, unless it's got issues already, they make a reliable vehicle. I'd actually buy an 80's HiLux if I could find a clean one, those things are awesome for what they are.
