I have a cracked transmission case in my 98. I'm wondering if there is any way to repair the crack with the trans in the truck (the crack is easy to access) or if I have to take it out to do it right.

Where's the crack and how big is it ? Are you leaking tranny fluid from it ?

FLEX SEAL! LOL

Welding is the only real way to fix a aluminum crack.
Here we go with the flex seal again ! lol But your right , Welding is the correct and proper way to fix it . But it does mean pulling it out .

Crack is on the side of the case, 8-10", I think it's leaking there and from the dipstick tube, I'll get a new o-ring for that.

It's been the same size for the 3 years I've owned it, and I'm not sure how long before that. My friend owned it and I don't know if he got it that way, but he said he never had any problems.

I just crawled under the truck and I must have been looking at it from the engine bay when I put the picture in my head. No way can anyone smaller than a chipmunk get anywhere near the crack. Too much crap in the way. And the whole drive train is leaky. I've been through leaky transmissions before. I'll wait as I don't drive the truck often and still want it available for the upcoming season. No fun fixing a truck in the snow voluntarily, or not. It'll be okay. The truck still acts the same as when I got it.

It might almost be worth it to just see if you could find a good used unit for the right price and just swap it out . It would be quicker , that's for sure .
