My 88 Ram has 318 TBI with 904 trans. The trans will leak....sometimes. It seems to be coming out through the pan gasket. It isn't constantly wet or leaking, and not just drips. It leaks out a nice puddle about a day after I drive it. I was told to check for a breather vent being clogged. I wasn't aware these TFs had an external case vent....or do they? I can't seem to find anything. But this does seem to be happening like my hydrostatic trans on my tractor did. It would leak the next day after it was ran and got hot. There was a case pop-up vent that was stuck. Once I got it un-stuck...no more leaks.

I was going to just change the pan gasket, but again this doesn't seem like a drippy constant leak.

Thanks for any input!

Could be almost anything . Can you tell by looking at the pan what side is leaking ? It could be the pan gasket , the front seal , the selector shaft seal or even the safety neutral switch . Before you start tearing into it , you should try and track down where it's leaking from . Just my two cents .

I hope it's not the front seal. I'd rather not drop the trans.

It seems to be leaking from the pan because I don't see fluid up higher than that. But what I find odd is then it doesn't just drip. It only leaks after driving and then a lot. It stopped now but its probably low at this point.

Hate to drain the trans and replace the pan gasket if it's going to blow out again for something more problematic than that. That's why I asked here first to get suggestions.

Thanks!

I had a dipstick o ring crack once and it was intermittent.
True , I didn't think of that one Hops . If that is the case then the leak should be more towards the front passenger side corner of the pan T-Ram .

I've just developed one of those intermittent leaks myself . The top of my shifter bracket ( B&M shifter ) keeps getting wet . I've changed the selector shaft seal and the gasket three times . But it's still getting wet . The lines are new and I checked them anyways and I even replaced the two bolts that hold the bracket with studs and nuts just in case there was to much flex in the bracket when I was shifting since I run a deep aluminum pan . But it still get wet every once in a while just on top of that bracket . It's one of those things that make you go Hmmmm . lol

Believe it or not I used it on the roof of my RV and it works!
Yeah and I've used it to , but a roof and a transmission are two different things .lol I think I'll just figure out the problem and fix it . It just kills me because everything is new and it shouldn't be leaking to begin with .

Something might warped, out of round?
I don't know . You would think with an aluminum pan everything would be true . While it's down this winter ,I'm thinking of installing longer studs were the bracket is just in case the fluid's weeping up from the top of the bolt holes . I might even just replace all the pan bolts with studs while I'm at it . I'll decide while I'm in there I guess .

I would check it and the tranny with a straight edge to be sure. Might just need a hone. Mopar makes a really good trans pan gasket that is thick and also reusable. I can try to find the part number, the guys on a body love it.

I told them my 1971 duster 727 transmission was weeping at my gasket and tried to fix it more than a couple of times. They told me to buy a new transmission pan from a dodge truck part number 52118780AD (is 3 1/2 inches deep) and gasket 2464324AC and I will never have a problem again.

That's probably the same gasket a friend of mine just told me to try . He said he just used it for the first time on his big block 65 and now he'll never use another one . I was planning on picking one up . It wouldn't hurt .

I believe that's the factory steel pan that comes on the Rams . I went with the deep finned aluminum one so that I could have the extra fluid and help keep the 727 cooler .
