Dads ol dodge

Another batch of parts from the blaster!!!!!

In these pics you can see how bad the axle was where the axle clamp sat, poor design that doesn't allow drainage so it just rust.

And the spring pads......... the rust severely dimpled the pads as you can see with a straight edge on them.

After heating them red hot and hammering them back.

The axle tubes after welding them up and grinding them smooth, I had figured on spending time with the torches pulling the tubes back straight but they look good (probably because they required welding almost all the way around).

Here's the super clean core support I scored at the local salvage yards.

The first part to be rebuilt, I bought a Gates rebuild kit and hopefully sealed this leaky turd back up. I elected to paint allot of the parts cast iron gray just cause I think it looks cool on the black frame?

The frame is starting to go back together, I'm using all fine thread bolts with red Loctite. So far it looks like I'll have to drill all of the holes (the rivet holes are just under 7/16" and 1/2").

The motor mounts welded back in (these were the only welds that had to be cut to tear the frame down).

And another batch in epoxy primer and paint. All done with painting chassis parts now and ready to start rebuilding parts and reassembly.

Maaan , Your coming along quick ! That truck is going to be better then it was when it was on the show room floor ! Good job , so far ! By the way , Nice looking Charger there !

Going very well there mate. I can't believe you're getting so much done in such a short space of time. At this rate, Dad's truck will be finished before I complete my bathroom renovation.

Haha, it's funny how much quicker a project goes when your not the one footing the bill...... My dad is beyond retirement age but still working and is debt free so he's got the extra money to keep it moving along. The goal is to have it on the road by summer but it may slow down once the body work starts!

I'd like to think so but this thing has a significant amount of rust but fortunately it's mostly on the frame meaning the body should be easier???

A luxury few can afford! Good for him!

Hi guys, thought I'd have a look around the site my first time on here using my dad's login, looks like a great project i've always been into trucks and love the plan of silver and white! Hope to have one myself some day :), Tilly

Haha, he actually helped on a few occasions with my Charger project to get it on the road. Hell of a guy that's always giving which is why I'm so pumped to be able to hand him the keys to his almost brand new pickup someday.

Don't know that's he'll fund yours though????

Good luck on finding that pickup, the good thing about these Dodges is their mostly the same from the 70's till 93 meaning you can buy a fairly new one and still have the classic look not to mention there's a ton of them out there for parts ........... as long as you don't need upper control arms haha.

Hey , I had to give it a shot ! lol It's good that you and your father have that relationship . I'm sure he'll be more then happy when you hand him them keys . Keep up the good work .

not bad. I've seen and worked on worse.... That a '83 or so model year truck? Has about the same grille my Dads last truck did and it was an '84..... The 318 looks pretty good too! How many miles on it?

It's an 82 and your right it's not too bad, just allot of serious rust pitting on the undercarriage. The 318 ran pretty well when we parked it but had a good rattle to it under load (haven't even looked at the mileage) so we'll get it torn apart and rebuild it soon enough. Thinking about some mild upgrades like an intake, small 4 barrel, an RV cam, a bump up in compression and maybe some cleaning up on the head just to add a little pep to it.

I knew it was close!!!!! The 318, the best thing you could do for it is bump up the Cam, my Dads '84 also had a 318, with so many miles on it, it wore off the cam lobes and had the mechanical fuel pump fail..... Then he noticed it lost a TON of power....

Not sure I'd go with an RV Cam, BUT a '73-'74 318 Plymouth Roadrunner cam be a good start, AFTERMARKET "hard" cam to fit the '73-4 Roadrunner 318 be a damn nice "upgrade" and it as normal use, not pushing the engine will last a long time with no issues.... Does your '82 have A/C in it? The Roadrunner cam may not produce enough vacuum for A/C if you go that route!

No A/C but this truck is going to continue it's life as a truck meaning whatever cam I go with has to put out at low rpm's so it won't be a big lumpy low vacuum cam. We'll see.

Damned! Ya'll speaking Chinese... Really cool Dad project 747. Even though I'm old, I'm learning everyday.
Thanks, it is a fun one do be able to do for sure. Biggest problem for me is figuring out where to go with it as far as looks go. I'd like to give it a cool look but 3/4 ton, 2 wheel drives with 8ft beds don't lend themselves to many options..... If it was 4 wheel drive you can put some meaty tires on it or if it was a 1/2 ton short bed it would be a sweet one to lower but a 3/4 ton that's going to continue life as a hauler is just that... It will likely be left alone with maybe some nicer looking wheels with maybe a little wider tires?
