I have a 2001 Dodge ram 2500 with a 360 with 327,000 miles on it. I am looking for a 360 with fewer miles on it, I found a 96 360 with 170,000 miles on it. Will the 96 360 bolt up to my 2001 tranny? What else will I need or need to do to make it fit in my truck?

This has got to be a diesel with that many miles. Get the engine complete as possible to eliminate any problems with drives and attachments.

Nope, just a good old 5.9 liter 360 gas.The thing still has great power, uses a little oil but with that many miles.

I thought the same with my 97 but the guy I bought it from had put a junkyard engine in it. She's got 368××× and still spins tire. If you're engine still has that much power you must have gotten a good one. And I think from 94 to 01 the engines were the same bolt pattern. And that oil leak could be from the plenum pan gasket on the bottom of the intake. I've fixed 3 or 4 and they quit burning oil. Easy fix.

I just looked my papa's truck has the same 360 in it that my 97 has and his is an 01.

Yes, it has plenty of power, I already changed the plenum gasket but it burns alittle.

Also, the owner of the 96 360 said the motor was sitting out side for 2 years well covered up. Should I be worried about that?

Me personally I would check to see if it turns over by hand if it don't I wouldn't mess with it. But that's just me. Check to see if it had oil sitting in it and if it looks like it had water sitting in the oil. Look it over real good. If nothing else rebuild the one you have in the truck. The kit is 500 bucks on summit and maybe cheaper on ebay.

I don't think I would trust it because it might have cracked the block/heads from freezing or the freeze plugs could be cracked or busted. It might be more than just swap and rock...

If I would get it I would take it apart and do some work to it, I didnt think about it freezing and possible crack.

The 5.9/360's didn't change hardly at all in that time frame mechanically speaking, everything will bolt up fine. The only thing you need to watch out for is if you get a pre magnum 360 aka LA block the engine mount holes could screw you over. The only thing I am unsure of is if the wiring harnesses would have changed at all.

I will only get a magnum, not a LA. I havent got anything yet, money is short and my 360 is running great right now. I will keep a eye out for a different one. Thanks for all your help.
