Hey Guys, Im looking to change out my old distributor for a new one. I have a freshly rebuilt stock la 318 in a 77 W100. Im looking for something ready to run for about 100.00 or maybe more. I see a million on ebay but wanted to ask you guys to see whats worked good for you.

I also wanted to ask if anyone uses HEI and if it will fit back aginst the firewall and pro and cons. Thanks for reading and any advice : )

Same question as "7mopar" . If it's all stock and running good then why mess with it ?

If I were to buy a new distributer today I would buy a fire core 50.
They run about 170 dollars, they have adjustable mechanical advance and vacuum advance and they are billet aluminum.
And they look a lot like a factory Mopar distributer.
My second choice would be a Mopar performance distributer built by don at fbo systems, I'm currently running a Mopar distributer that don at fbo built for me and it's been a pretty good unit, I think they run about 160 dollars.
Dons distributer also has adjustable mechanical advance and vacuum advance.

Thanks for the heads up Pjc. I haven't bought one yet and My buddy told me the springs are weak. I think the distributor in it is a old cheap Oriley's and its a dog in 3rd and 4th gear until I get going in these gears, Im also getting ping unless I run high octane. Im advanced @ 8 at idle. And yes I want an adjustable advance.

If he has engine knock now advancing the timing more will not help. It more than likely needs to be set at about 5° which would be the factor setting.

As it sits @8 We pretty much got the sweet spot as far as getting the most out of it which isnt much. especially with it pinging more in 3rd and 4th gear. Once I get moving its less but right after shifting and give a it gas is mostly my pinging points. Has anyone ever put a complete hei unit in and will it fit or is it a pain with it being so close or hitting the firewall ? Also I got a great deal on a set of Hancock 11-32-15 tires which gave me a little taller tire for highway cruising in the 4speed manual but I also have noticed the sluggish downfall to doing it. This is a stock 20 over rebuilt 318 2bbl truck. I dont need allot of power im just looking for something that runs as a stock motor should without ping.. Other then that it runs GREAT idles smooth and really enjoy driving it. :)

I dunno about the HEI idea its one of those things I always here people talk about but I have yet to see anyone do it. I second the FBO idea, I have one of his systems and I think its the shit! Could always get the MP orange box setup to if they still make that. I know a lot of people poo poo that setup, myself included but with a stock engine I had no issues with it. I think it was even an ok system with a cam slightly better than stock with alum intake and 600cfm carb. Once you go past that point you will hate it to like the rest of us! LOL Both of these though are well past your $100 budget though. I think the one guy said $160 for the FBO but I am fairly sure I paid over $200 maybe $300 for mine but there might be different versions.
